NUMBER ONE HIT

Ben E. King ‘Stand By Me’
On one of our infinite number of trips home from Bob Evans’ Restaurant for the early bird special with my grandparents, this song came on. My little brother was in the backseat of the station wagon next to me and we were so gouged on greasy food and Coca Cola that everything seemed so funny. Plus anytime spent with the grandparents always put us, and still does put us, in an automatically jovial mood. We put our heads together and made up little moves to the whole thing and laughed and laughed and they kept turning around to see what was so funny, but we wouldn’t tell them.
That was probably at least a decade ago or more but I hear the song and I remember the moves and the mood of that drive so clearly, and I hear it and feel so close to him even though we live far away now. Such a perfect song for brothers and sisters, such a perfect anthem for all that he’s been to me and all that he will be for me.
